Science teacher Miss Prewett’s chemistry class was buzzing with activity over an experiment that involved making iron sulfide on Nov. 29, 2018. One of the four chemistry students, junior Shelby Colvin, kindly explained the steps (stated below). Her sulfur was the only one of four to burst into flames. Junior Keenan Murnion advises everyone to take chemistry because “we do a lot of cool experiments” and would also like to state that “[I] did the experiment better than Shelby and Macy.”
When asked about what the students struggled with, Prewett commented “that all they struggled with was really the apprehension of what exactly was going to happen and whether or not it was going to be safe. Even though it was quite safe!” Now one might ask, what is the point of this experiment? Miss Prewett was quick to answer ,“The class was learning how to put chemicals together, how binary ionic compounds are formed and the difference between a mixture and a compound. In addition, discovering that compounds aren’t formed as simply as one might think! We tied up a lot of things in a small experiment.”

 

The Steps To Make Iron Sulfide
Take a spoonful of sulfur and add to test tube
Take a quarter of a spoonful of iron and add to the tube
Use a blowtorch to heat the bottom of the test tube
Take a beaker of water and put it up to the test tube, that is supported by a ring stand
-this causes the testube to shatter and then your iron sulfide will be in beaker!
( Do not try at home!!!)
